~ reflections 🍁🍃🍂

On an overcast morning, visiting the school was an unplanned stop on my itinerary, but one they hoped I was open to seeing. “No one comes to this village”, he said, “it’s just too far”, but I was up for the adventure. As I hiked down the long, red dirt road, I began compiling my “shot list” in my head. Desks, kids learning, close ups of supplies, maybe a shot through a window…..trying to be as prepared as I could.

Coming into the clearing, I was guided to a small wooden bench and sat down, quickly scanning my surroundings. As hundreds of skeptical little faces looked back at me, I began listening to their story. “Here is our school”, he said, pointing to the 8’ x 30’ foot pole and grass structure. “Teaching our children is difficult”, he paused. “We have no chairs for them, or books or supplies, and the weather can make it impossible some days to even hold class.” For the next 20 minutes, he continued on, as I listened to him share about his village, their life, and the dreams they have for their children. Dreams that were no different than mine.

As he spoke, my mind took me down the path of all the trivial things I’ve stressed over with school. Could I find all the items on the supply list at Target, or did I really have to go to two stores to get that all done? Did I have to really get up early every morning to pack 5 lunches and walk all the way to the bus stop for the next 9 months? Will I have time to grab a Starbucks on my way to pick them up? And oh the homework….do I really have to spend my nights reading, correcting and encouraging?

Humbling…to say the least.
